Hello all!

Today I took the leap and joined Pinterest. At first, I really had no interest in another internet time waster. I don’t get much down time, what with raising two little ones and all. I definitely couldn’t imagine having the time to spend a couple of hours a day trudging through images of pretty things. But, as two of my girlfriends were talking it up a couple of weeks ago, I started to wonder what all the hub bub was about.

After requesting an invitation and then being invited, here I am, a bona fide Pinner of images. It all so simple… and exciting! I can find recipes, DIY crafts and home decorating, cool new products and search for a dress for my 20th (Yikes!) high school reunion all in one place. Plus, I get to see what my friends are into these days.

Besides the obvious fun factor, I’m now thinking it may be the perfect way to get my natural products line (that will soon be on Etsy) off to a running start. What better way to gain new customers than to share lovely photos of my products on Pinterest?

Juni is still not completely past the colic and it is definitely wearing on me. He’s much better now, but he has his bad days. I’m shocked that at this point Miles doesn’t hate both of us. I’m constantly shushing him so that Juniper will sleep a little longer. I just need the quiet is all. I know it’s good to let babies get use to sleeping through noisy situations so they know the difference between night time and day time sleeping, but… honestly my brain needs him to sleep. So far gripe water is the only thing that will calm him when he’s deep into the crying. If I didn’t have that at the ready, I’d probably have gone postal by now. I’ve just gone a teeny bit crazy, so that’s not too bad I guess.

To any mama going through this with her little bundle of heaven, I highly recommend Wellements Gripe Water For Colic. It’s made with organic ginger and fennel extracts as well as organic chamomile flower. It has no alcohol or sucrose in it. It’s been mommy’s little helper for the past month or so. I don’t know what I did before it or what I’d do without it. You can order it at the link above. Luckily it is also sold at Kid to Kid Consignment stores, which has a store local to me.

Farm and Dairy


I spent the day with a newly acquired friend and Miles driving around NJ and a little bit of PA. We started off the day in search of a raw milk farm and ended up finding the farm and a fantastic store in New Hope, PA. The farm was called Birchwood Farm and it’s found right over the PA border. Sadly we didn’t get to see any cows because of the snow and cold weather, but we had a really swell time shopping in the farm’s store and talking with the shop keeper. They sell gallons of fresh, raw, organic, grass fed: whole milk, cheese, ice cream, yogurt, butter, ghee. Additionally, they sell organic grass fed beef, pork, veal and lamb. They were not fully stocked today, so there was no ice cream or yogurt (sad face). She let us sample some raw milk and it was sooooooo delicious. Miles gulped it down and asked for more, which is strange since he won’t drink cold milk normally. I ended up buying a gallon of milk, a block of garlic cheddar and some ground beef. I would have definitely bought the yogurt if it had been in stock. We’re looking forward to another trip back relatively soon, but we’ll make sure to call ahead to see what they have available.


The great new store was Jake’s Playhouse on Main street in New Hope. This is the third store to be opened by the owners and is really a perfect fit for New Hope. They sell the Life is Good brand, fantastic dog toys and treat and awesome toys for kids. They pretty much sell everything you can think of from Melissa and Doug! Miles played with the wooden train set, stuffed dogs, mini shopping cart and a super cute alligator chomping push toy. I bought Miles a Potty Catty, which is a fun and cute potty training motivational tool. It has a roll of toilet paper, a book, 4 mini magazines, a potty chart, stickers and bulls eyes for the bottom of the potty. I love it and can’t wait to start using it with him.

It was incredibly fun and a refreshing change of pace to get out, find some new places and meet some great people.

Fabulous!

I just bought the Fabulously Fit Mom for New Moms dvd at the grocery store for $4.99. I played the first half which consisted of a warm up and standing moves. I just wanted to see if it would be something that I would enjoy doing on a regular basis, so I hadn’t changed out of my jeans or pulled out my yoga mat. Even just doing the first half was a really nice workout. It’s done with a medicine ball or if your baby is small enough, you hold them while you go through the routine. I’m very much looking forward to doing the entire workout tomorrow during Miles’ nap. Hey, it beats $50 a month at the gym.

I’m so looking forward to next week. My best friend is going to be visiting from New Hampshire for a week or two and we are planning a sleep over at my house. She’ll be with her 2 kids, so it might get a little crowded. I don’t care though. I miss her greatly and can’t wait to spend some time with another stay at home mom. We share many of the same issues and have very similar ideas when it comes to raising our children. We both believe in feeding our kids whole organic foods and using homeopathic remedies as a first line of defense when our kids are not well. I’d love to take her to A Better World Cafe in Highland Park. I was there yesterday with my friend Megan and it was really nice. It’s sort of a community soup kitchen that is run on donations. There is a suggested price for what you eat, but if you can’t afford it, you pay whatever you can manage. Some people pay more, so that others can eat for free. There is one dish that is free everyday, so if you don’t have the money, it’s an easy choice. Yesterday the free dish was eggplant parmesan. Also all of the ingredients are fresh, locally grown and sometimes organic. I had Miles with me and we both ate our fill for around $10. Sandwiches, soup, coffee and dessert. Speaking of dessert, we shared a vegan sweet potato blondie that was absolutely scrumptious.

Something else that’s fabulous is the new line of head wraps that I’m working on. I’m thinking of calling them the Bad Hair Day wrap or possibly the Naughty Hair Day wrap. It’s been slow going for some reason, but I’ve got a couple done. I just need to keep up the work and get some photos taken so I can put them in the shop. They cover just enough hair to camouflage the fact that you haven’t done or can’t do a thing with you hair. I wear mine nearly every day. Sad, but true.

Anywho, that’s the fabulousness of the day.

We’ve been using sign language with Miles for the past 6 months or so and it is finally starting to sink in with him. Also, he now has the dexterity in his fingers to really be able to communicate back. I had wondered if using sign language would impede his desire to start talking, but it seems that he is also starting to use more words now as well. We have a Baby Einstein dvd that he loves which teaches basic signs that babies would need on a daily basis. I enjoy watching it with him, because I’m learning too. When I was growing up, my best friend’s mother was deaf. I learned how to sign the alphabet and a couple of words, but not enough to really communicate well with her. I wish that there had been videos that were readily available to me back then. I think it would be wonderful for Miles if he could be fluent in sign language, so that he could speak with the hearing impaired someday. The confusing part for me is recognizing when he is signing or just being silly. I try to be attentive to him and watch for the signs, but it’s not always easy. This morning I was changing his diaper and handed him the ointment container to keep himself occupied. He started rubbing his chest in a circular motion, which means ‘Please’. However, since he was holding the ointment, I wasn’t sure if he was asking to have some vix rubbed on his chest or just saying ‘Please’ after the fact. So, I put a little vix on him and hoped that that was what he wanted.

We were taking our bath the other night and I started to really look at Miles in amazement. He’s growing so quickly and so wonderfully. I still can not believe that Kofi and I made this beautiful little creature and that he grew inside of me out of 2 minute cells. It brought tears to my eyes. Life is astounding sometimes, if you pay attention long enough.

After spending the past 3 months preparing for my first craft fair, I thought that I would be dragging my butt around feeling exhausted. Quite the contrary. Seeing and hearing the feedback from my customers was a great experience and made me tremendously excited to start new projects and to create more original items for my Etsy shop.

Sometimes I think that’s all it takes is accomplishing a big goal to make you feel great about yourself. Losing the baby weight was a big one for me along with breast feeding Miles for his whole first year of life. Now, I can say that I was able to prepare and turn a profit at my first craft fair. It certainly wasn’t easy. I crocheted and crocheted up until the last night before the fair and my wrist still hurts to prove it. Thanks to my husband Kofi for being super dad for the entire week leading up to the fair, I was able to get it all done and feel like I had enough inventory for the space.

Now I have several new products in my shop that didn’t sell at the craft fair, but seem to be very popular in the Etsy-verse. I’m proud of them and feel like I’m finally finding my artistic self through them.

organic care package from up north

Our wonderful friend Sol from New Hampshire owns a natural products brokerage company and sends us care packages every couple of months. They are always filled with beautifully scented, organic soaps and lotions among other things. For the first 5 months of Miles’ life we didn’t need to purchase any bath or body products for him or ourselves. Even now, we only need to buy a tube of A and D ointment when his diaper rash is too much for the natural ointments to handle.
Today we received another box of lovelies from our dear Uncle Sol. It’s so nice to have a little treat every once in a while. Organic baby products are pretty dang expensive and we wouldn’t be able to buy them ourselves. So, we feel incredibly lucky to have a generous friend who cares enough to bestow some gifts upon us.

I’m writing this quickly between breakfast, diaper changes, crocheting and plans for an afternoon with my niece. I just needed to prove to myself that I can still write and that there is still time for ME. These past two weeks have been very full of good times and lots of work. Miles and I spent a week with my parents in New York. We had a wonderful time with my family, but missed Kofi so much that I don’t think I can do it again solo. At least not for a long time. While I was away I spent most of my spare time crocheting because my scarves are now going to be sold in a shop in New Hampshire that I use to manage (LisAnn’s) I’m really excited about this and hope that they do well there. The owner and I have been friends for several years and after looking at my etsy shop, she ordered a dozen for the store.

Miles has been growing out of his britches and learning so many new things, I definitely don’t have time to list them all now.

It feels good to write again. I hope that more time opens up for me to write every day like I use to. That’s going to have to be it for now. Miles grows impatient and whiney. Smile.

Netflix, why hast thou forsaken me?

The one luxury that my husband and I allow ourselves is a monthly netflix subscription. It’s not much, but it lets us watch 2 movies a week without going completely broke. We can see movies that have come out since our son was born, that we couldn’t see in the theater. Not to mention those guilty pleasure films that we wouldn’t ever want anyone to know we are watching. We love our netflix. We look forward to netflx day, like sad, poor people such as ourselves would. So when the movie shows up broken, unplayable, or not at all it’s a big deal.

Which brings me to why I feel so left out in the cold. In the last month we have had 2 broken discs that we then had to return and wait for the replacement disc to arrive. Now our movie that was scheduled to arrive on Saturday has still not gotten to us and it is now Tuesday. When I went online to complain, the automated response told me that the disc isn’t considered lost or late unless it is not in our mail today. We feel cheated! We have averaged one movie per week for the last month. We, as a rule, try to get our money’s worth out of everything we pay for. We don’t have any to waste, so I think that when they say fast efficient delivery, they should back it up. We could just as easily watch 2 RedBox movies from the grocery store every week for the same price. Of course the selection isn’t as great.

Perhaps if they were to give a free dvd to the customer every time a movie was more than one day late, they would be more accurate with their shipping. They are really stealing from us every time they make us wait. They can’t control when a disc is broken in transit, but they shouldn’t make us wait until they receive it to send a replacement either. I think that netflix is a great service, but we’re thinking of trying something new. I know that Blockbuster has a similar program. I’m going to take some time today to research it a bit and see if they can keep me from going nuts on the mailman.
